WHAT IS WORLD OCEANS DAY?
World Oceans Day is an annual event observed by all UN member states and other States that choose to on June 8.
Originally founded in 1992 by Canada at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and officially recognized by the United Nations in 2008.
The ocean is the heart of our planet pumping its water across the planet Like your heart pumps blood to every part of your body. It connects continents, making possible international trade. It is home to billions of sea creatures and provides seafood to millions of people. Its importance to the planet can not be over emphasized and the World Oceans Day is observed to honour the world’s oceans and to appreciate its own intrinsic value.

It is sad though that the ocean is not well appreciated as global pollution has taken toll and We do not know how much of it the ocean can take.
Oil pollution is common, our coastlines Are full of dirt especially plastics and other inorganic materials that do not decompose.
Over fishing is also a big problem as population of the majority of species in the oceans are lessening in a drastic manner due to unregulated and illegal fish hunting.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says that “Urgent action on a global scale is needed to alleviate the world’s oceans from the many pressures they face, and to protect them from future dangers that may tip them beyond the limits of their carrying capacity. ”
